The first thing you notice about the LG Crystal is its transparent touch keypad. A first for a mobile phone you have to congratulate LG for trying something a little out of the ordinary. Made from tempered glass the edges light up with a bluish-white effect which looks fantastic in the dark – you are going to stand out in a crowd at night for sure. The soft glow projects the keypad images onto the transparent plastic backing and the vibration feedback as you touch each key is really quite impressive.
The LG Crystal keypad is actually a lot more than just a means of dialling or texting numbers. It’s a multi touch sensitive controller similar to those found on modern laptop computers like the synaptics mouse pad and it is very sensitive. Just a swipe of the finger on the keypad scrolls through the various menus and items on the phone.
By pinching or opening your fingers on the mouse pad you can zoom in and out of web pages and images viewed on the phones touch screen. This is a really useful function when surfing because it makes it easier to home in on hyperlinks and parts of pages that you need to see more closely.
Another outstanding feature of the LG Crystal GD900 is its ability to recognise handwriting, this is first for an S-Class 3D handset and it works very well. Even sliding your finger to the left to erase letters works well enough however to write quickly needs a bit of practice.
The use of Gestures to access various apps such as contacts is a fun feature and one that you probably won’t tire of. You can apply various symbols to each application then activate it by say drawing a circle or making a line. Watch out though, the Crystals touch pad and screen are really sensitive so care is needed not to activate other features. There is almost no part of the LG Crystal that is not touch sensitive but given a little playing time, for most this will be a non issue.
For those that like to use old fashioned texting and dialling on a cellular phone the keypad is fast and responsive. Just as well as the on screen keyboard does take a bit of getting used too and may not appeal to avid ‘texters’.
