As a personal organiser the LG Crystal ticks most of the boxes and many of the functions are quite intuitive.
All LG phones these days come with a built in alarm clock and this LG phone is no different. Its possible to set up various alarm calls and so they are easily recognisable each one has its own melody. You can call up either in analogue or digital mode and inputting the info is where it gets really interesting. The background image tells you immediately if you are entering AM or PM which is useful to know. In digital mode there are two rollers, akin to a slot machine, which appear allowing you to scroll round the clock setting your time in hours and minutes. There are quicker ways to set an alarm call but this way is by far the coolest and most impressive.
There is a quick alarm option too that allows setting short term reminders say for the next hour but a word of caution. Its easy to turn off the ringing alarm mode by pressing a single key during setup leading to no alarm call at all.
The organiser options in the LG Crystal are further enhanced with a simplified notes mode that allows up to 1000 symbols per entry. There is a chronometer included along with a stunning calculator, probably the nicest we have seen on a mobile. handset. It even has a scientific mode so architects’ and engineers may find this a useful little gadget. There’s a unit convertor to but in the currency option you nee to input the exchange rate manually for it to give up to date results. A pity that this could not have been refreshed in real time over the internet. A world clock is included too and you can track world time over six cities of your choice around the globe. Lastly the LG Crystal GD900 is equipped with a voice recorder which although not top spec is adequate for on the fly note taking.
The Calendar mode offers a selection of options through a full month or week providing time slots for a specific day and time. You can pull up a list of all previously entered events and these can be classified in three categories’, birthdays’, anniversary and meetings. Each one has its start and end dates, subject and location information. Additional notes can be added and recurrence patterns can be added and tracked. Another innovation is that the phone user can identify various periods as bank holidays by colouring red. All the data in your schedule and task lists can be saved to memory card or transmitted by Bluetooth to another type of device.
Start the message menu and you are taken into incoming messages which are grouped by date. Similar to the layout used on the IPhone visually it has a pleasing feel and is easy to navigate. Switching to your outbox is by an icon on the top of the screen where you can view sent messages or follow linked conversations in a threaded format. Pressing another button allows you to reply to your incoming messages, touching another icon brings up the phones qwerty keyboard to type your response. Attaching files is easy to, again touch the appropriate icon and browse to the file you want to send.
If you use any of the main e-mail web based providers , Gmail, Yahoo etc, you will have no problem setting up accounts as these links are preloaded. Both POP 3 and IMAP4 protocols are supported too on the Crystal and you can retrieve your mail at preset intervals by using auto retrieve. SSL encryption is also supported. The LG Crystal also has support for the Microsoft Exchange server to sync emails contacts and calendar.
Composing short messages using the T9 function is easy and fast using the great sensitivity of the Crystal TouchPad as a normal keyboard. Alternatively this LG Phone allows you to compose messages using the hand writing recognition , this can be achieved through the keypad and the phones touch screen.
Using the Crystal touch sensitive viewing screen there are two choices of keyboard layout. The layouts are different than earlier LG Mobiles like the Viewty Smart in that the keys are round. Typing vertically the typing is a little slower than using the Crystal Touchpad, the landscape view is a better option. Most users will probably sacrifice speed for the ease of using the very pleasing touch screen provided with the LG Crystal.
Local connectivity is provided by Bluetooth 2.1. Alternatively you can connect using a USB cable 2.0. Options available once connected are to set the handset to Mass Storage Device, connect via PC Suite or use iSync. You need to install LG PC Suite if you want to synchronize cellular phone contacts, calendar and notes, upload music, pictures, videos, programs or download messages, emails and so on.
