The new LG Crystal mobile phone has certainly made an impact since its launch in August this year. LG, always at the cutting edge of innovative design, have produced just about the coolest looking mobile phone ever.
Absolutely loaded with features to make your head spin the LG Crystal is well able to hold its own with other high end mobile phones except in one department. It has no on board GPS which is maybe not so important when you see what brand new features this latest mobile phone can offer.
Transparent Keypad
The LG Crystal GD900 is not the first mobile phone with a slider but its certainly a world first in that the keypad is transparent. Its completely flat too but with plenty of space between the keys to reduce key errors when fast texting. In fact there are no keys as such just an etched numeric slide down keypad which is super sensitive, akin to a laptop computer touch pad – and very responsive.
The Mouse Mode feature enables internet browsing with the sweep of a finger. Another exclusive to the LG Crystal is Multi Finger Touch Recognition which enables two finger operation to speed response time.
Viewing Screen
The three inch screen, although smaller than some previous LG mobile phones, is touch sensitive too and incredibly has a high resolution at 800 x 400 pixels. Combined with16 million colours the display is ultra clear with bright, saturated colours giving a great viewing experience.
Four Home Screens
The display uses the LG S-Class user interface with its clever rotating cube which presents four different home screens to the user when swiped lightly with a finger. Although the same function can be routed through a single key below the screen we think that this feature is pretty cool.
A single finger swipe will let you navigate with ease between multimedia, contacts, shortcuts and widget pages. Every screen is customisable by the user so you can adapt each screen to the layout and feel that you want.
Eight Megapixel Camera
Sliding the keyboard out reveals an eight-megapixel camera on the rear of the handset next to an LED flash. The keypad has to be slid out to activate the camera mode, this makes the handset fairly long, but the reason soon becomes obvious. To zoom in and out of a shot you just move your finger in a circular motion on the transparent keypad, either clockwise or anticlockwise, and there you have it – brilliant!
Select the exposure settings on the left of the screen and repeat the procedure it is just so easy and slick. It works faultlessly there’s no denying the innovative appeal of this feature.
Photo quality is excellent if perhaps slightly dull. However once downloaded to your computer, using any of the free photo retouch suites available these days just a small adjustment on brightness and contrast is all that is needed. Onboard memory is 1.5 GB, plenty for most of us but this can be extended by using a micro sd card
Internet Browsing
The Lg Crystal supports Wi-Fi speeds of up to 7.2Mps depending on your location and network provider. Once again the super cool touch keypad is a dream to use as it acts just like an optical mouse.
Swipe your finger over the handsets keypad and the onscreen mouse pointer will follow smoothly making browsing a snap. Pinch and drag like Apples IPhone and you can zoom in and out of the pages, follow hyperlinks and so on with ease.
Gesture Shortcut
This is a real innovation and fun too.
Gesture shortcuts on the GD900 LG Crystal can be used to command 9 multitasking applications by drawing the designated characters on the touchpad. Setting up is a snap you just assign any of the available characters to each function then, using your finger, simply draw that character straight onto the transparent keypad. You will be taken directly to your music, messages, contacts and many more.
Music
LG has teamed up with Dolby Mobile for all its high end mobile phones and the Crystal GD900 is not excluded. And since the handset can accommodate micro sd cards up to 16GB you will have access to all the storage you need. Headphones can be connected wirelessly as the LG Crystal naturally supports Bluetooth.
The gesture shortcuts are particularly clever and the look and feel of the Crystal puts it in a class of its own. The lack of GPS is unlikely to put off purchasers who want to own a cutting edge mobile phone that turns heads and sets them apart from the ordinary.
Our Verdict
The LG Crystal is bound to be a huge success in that it packs so many features into a really innovative design. This latest handset stands out from other LG mobile phones because of its clever transparent touch keypad and the way it integrates functions within the phone using the touch screen.
